OUR OWN WAYS TO STOP HARMFUL FISHING

Harmful Fishing is a practice that we we should stop. Theses are the comprehensive ways to do so.
 I.    Ban on Blast Fishing
 a.     Blast Fishing is a practice of using dynamite or other types of bombs to stun or kill fish  easily. The problem is that this practice is extremely destructive to the surrounding ecosystems. From  the pressure waves created from the bomb, the oceanic floors receive damage, and so does other fish  that are not meant to be captured.
 b.     Our plan is to ban blast fishing.
    II.   Net with various sizes
 a.     Currently, there is no regulation in Indonesia relating to the size of the net mashes. However, if  commercial fishing continues catching small sized fish, certain generation of fish might disappear  causing problems with fish population overall. So we have decided to set a rule about the size of the  mashes that fishermen can use. However, we noticed a problem with this policy that if we catch all  the big ones, the gene that makes fish big will disappear. Therefore, we are going to regulate  fishermen’s net sizes to have various mashes.
  III. Usage of Fish Finders
 a.     Fish vary greatly in size and behavioral patterns. So by using fish finders and will-be-developed  technologies to analyze the patterns, we will be able to distinguish which type of fish they are. By  using these equipment, we can avoid catching endangered species or species that we should not  catch, like the ones we are going to mention further on our next point.
IV. Ban Fishing during mating season
 a.     Mating season is an important chances that fishes or other marine lives have to reproduce, to  allow continual population growth. Our plan is to ban fishing or collection of marine organisms  during mating season. Like what we’ve seen in the case of South Korea, in crab catching, it allows  population stability of that particular species.

Benefits of stopping Harmful Fishing

Harmful fishing has many drawbacks. It destroys both marine habitats and organisms. As a result, it can disturb the ecosystems. So there is a need to stop harmful fishing.

In our previous post, we have explained about the detailed problems with harmful fishing and ways to solve them. In today's post, we will introduce the benefits of stopping it in various points of views.

Economical Value
  1. Can be developed into products with high values-medicine, chemicals
  2. Diverse ecosystem➞Sight-seeing➞Tourism➞Income
  3. Rehab of Coral Reefs v.s. Keeping them good
⥤Keeping them healthy is Easier and Cheaper
    4. Earnings from fishing (continual steadiness of species)

Scientific Value
  1. Can research on new species
    • They can be breakthrough in scientific fields like biology
  2. Cannot be found anywhere else-unique
Ecological Value
  1. Sustainable eco-systems, food maps
  2. Variety of genes
  3. Protection of key habitats (reefs, places where cold and warm water masses meet, etc)
  4. Safety of endangered species

Stop Harmful Fishing

  • Why?
    • Marine and Coastal Environment is a very diverse ecosystem. About 700,000 to a million species live in oceans. Some scientists also predict that between one thirds to two thirds of undiscovered species resides in marine environment.
    • Harmful fishing has the possibility of leading many marine species to extinction. Harmful fishing include methods of fishing such as blast fishing and drag fishing. These methods catch a large number of organisms as well as harm the local marine infrastructure. By continuing in these ways of fishing,  it might potentially effect the food cycle that will cause the system to forcibly change further damaging the ecology of the marine life.
  • What Methods Are Included In Harmful Fishing?
    • Blast Fishing
    • Drag Fishing
    • Ghost Fishing
    • Overfishing
    • Catching small or pregnant organisms
    • Catching Endangered species
  • How to Solve?
    • Ban Blast Fishing (Prohibition for fishing with explosives)
    • Net with various sizes ➔ Catch fishes with different sizes
      • If we just allow catching larger fishes, the large size fishes will disappear and its genes will fade. So, we should catch adult fishes with various sizes
    • Fish Finder
    • Collect deserted net or hooks
    • Fish Farms(aquaculture)
    • Special permits for fishermen
    • Ban fishing during mating season
    • Limit on the number of organisms that can be caught/limit on the weight
    • Ban catching endangered species

To Conserve Marine Environment

Ways to conserve Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Biodiversity
  • No Violent (Blast) Fishing
  • Stop Water Pollution
    • Over nutritious water
    • Plastic off shores
    • Garbage
  • Protect Coral Reef
Thinking about economics & conservation availability

*Related Biodiversity Decline Reasons*

  • Habitat Loss (Destruction)
  • Overhunting/fishing

The importance of biodiversity

Biodiversity is the diversity of species, the diversity of genes, and the diversity of ecosystems. The benefits that biodiversity gives us are numerous.
With biodiversity, we can produce new types of medications. Secondly, it protects species' conservation. The gene diversity ensures the maintenance of the species. Thirdly, biodiversity has economical values. We can use them directly and indirectly. Fourthly, it has scientific values. If the species live on, we humans can research it to find more ways to use it to make our lives better. Also, they allow us to live sustainably.

BUT: The Major Causes of the Decline of Biodiversity
  1. Habitat Loss
  2. Invasive Species
  3. Climate Change
  4. Over Hunting
  5. Pollution
